Juraj Tranovský Statue
The sandstone statue of the life size evangelical priest Juraj Tranovský is located at the entrance to the Evangelical Church on Tranovského Street. It is the work of academic sculptor Ladislav Pollák.
Juraj Tranovský (1592 Tešín – 1637 Liptovský Mikuláš)
A native of today's Polish Tešín dedicated his life to a strong Lutheran faith. After the violent re-catholicization to which the population of Bohemia was exposed after the battle of „Bitka na Bielej hore“ (eng. Battle at the White Mountain) in 1620, Tranovský was forced into exile. He found his home first in Poland, then in Slovakia. He came to Liptovský Mikuláš at the invitation of the Pongrác and Okoličány families, where he worked for 6 years. He completed his most extensive and important work here - a collection of sacred songs Cithara Sanctorum. The first edition was published in 1636 and contained lyrics and melodies of 412 songs, of which more than 150 were translated or composed by Tranovský himself. Enriched with a collection of prayers, it was published under the name of Tranovský's Cancional. It was used in most Slovak evangelical churches with certain variations and with the gradual addition of up to 1300 songs until 1992. Rare copies of the Cithary Sanctorum can be seen in the historical library at the old evangelical vicarage on Tranovského Street.
