Jánošík´s Torture Chamber and Courtroom

Jánošík´s Torture Chamber and Courtroom

The Janko Kráľ Museum hides one of the cruellest courts in the history of the town, where the brigand captain Juraj Jánošík was interrogated and convicted in 1713. "This house hates laziness, loves peace, punishes crimes, preserves rights, and honours the good" – says the inscription found on a wall of the first County Hall, where Jánošík was most likely judged. Today, Jánošík´s Courtroom is located in these authentic premises. read more
You can learn how did the trial of legendary Jánošík take place in Jánošík´s Torture Chamber, which is hidden in the dark underground of the museum. The gloomy atmosphere is completed by historical drawings of torture, torture instruments – a scraper, a pincer, Spanish boot, or pliers for pulling the tongue. They are witnessing the inhuman practices of the time when torture was a legal part of the trial. In Jánošík´s Courtroom, which realistically depicts the courts of the time, you can dress in period costumes and become a judge, advocate or Jánošík himself. Test the hardness of the scraper, sit in the judge´s chair, or adjudge Jánošík to death. You can also see a gallows with a hook, although Jánošík was executed on a hill on the outskirts of the town, as a warning. As robbery was considered a felony, they chose one of the cruellest methods of execution - hanging on a hook through a man´s left rib. Jánošík´s Torture Chamber and Courtroom are part of the exposition of the Janko Kráľ Museum.
