THE DISTRICT HOUSE

The largest building in the centre of the square with the relief of Liptó County coat of arms on the façade served as administrative building. It was the seat of the County Court and the prison.
Though, the decision to build a new administrative building for Liptó County (called Zhupa after 1849) was issued under Empress Maria Theresa, Peter Grossmann from Banská Bystrica did not complete the building until 1793. It assumed its present form after reconstruction in 1907 when another floor was built. The open space in front of Zhupa Hall has always been the centre and heart of the town. It changed into a colourful market every Tuesday and, into a fair several times a year. The citizens of Mikuláš has gathered here to meet visitors, celebrated and protested, berated occupants, applauded Olympic winners…

A part of Zhupa Hall was rented to house the exhibitions of the Slovak Karst Museum in 1936 – 1949. It used to be the seat of the District National Committee in the second half of the 20th century and nowadays it is the seat of the District Office. Even now, Zhupa Hall is in the background of many events; the Days of County, Mikuláš Fair and other public events.
