Church of St. Nicholas was the basis around which the town was slowly and gradually formed. The heart of the town, the square Námestie osloboditeľov, is surrounded by continuous lines of former townhouses. Here you can find the Pongrács’s Mansion, which belonged to the noble Pongrác family for centuries, the Illešházy’s Mansion (First County Hall) and the majestic County House. The square was proclaimed to be town preservation area in 1991. Only a few minutes from here other architectural monuments can be found: Evangelical church and the old evangelical vicarage, the synagogue or the school building Gymnázium M.M.Hodžu.
